What is SEO?

September 3rd, 2014

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process by which companies and organizations can increase their search engine rankings–or in lay terms, move to the top of search engine results.

Why does SEO Matter–Especially for Local Businesses?
The good news: 59% of adults use search engines on a daily basis, and 76% of Americans report using search engines to find local business information.
The not-so-good-news: If your site doesn't show up in the first page of results, it’s highly unlikely to attract visitors from search engines. In fact, 52% of all clicks go to the first 10 results in searches, while only 5% of clicks come from results that appear on the second page.  Basically, SEO directly influences the amount of traffic your website sees–and ultimately, the amount of foot traffic your business receives. It’s a marketing tool too important to ignore.

So How Do I Do SEO?
The truth of the matter is that Search Engine Optimization often involves some technical know-how when designing and developing your website. You’ll hear terms thrown around, such as “Meta Tags” “Title Descriptions” and “Meta Descriptions.” But, it doesn't end there!  In fact, with new Google algorithms (the fancy term for the way the search engine returns search results), business owners have more tools than ever to increase their odds of being found online. Not only are these tools fairly simple to understand, they don’t cost a dime to use.
